In April 2012 Bread to the Nations initiated a sponsorship program with New Destiny Children’s Home as a way for the family’s household needs to be met on a consistent basis. Instead of simply providing funds, we think it is important to offer opportunities for relationships to grow between individuals and families in the US and children in Haiti. Bread to the Nations’ sponsorship program thus not only supports a child’s financial needs but through nurturing a relationship, it encourages a child and gives them hope for a brighter future.
Monthly support of a one child provides for their basic living expenses, such as food, clothing and school tuition fees. The total amount it takes to provide for a child in our program is $120 per month. In addition to Pastor Firmin’s six biological children, fourteen children have joined the home since the earthquake in January 2010. Most of the children have at least one living parent who, due to lack of resources after the earthquake, were no longer able to provide for them. Often in Haiti when parents find themselves not able to provide for their children, they place their child with a relative or another family. Too often, these children end up serving as domestic slaves (restaveks) or get swept up into the sex trade. By providing sponsorships for these children we are protecting them from this fate.
We have recently expanded our sponsorship program and have some sponsorship opportunities available. Please contact us if you would like to learn more about this program.
We encourage letter writing between sponsors and children, and sponsors are encouraged to visit their sponsored children on mission trips to Pastor Firmin’s community.
