The Dominican Republic – Beauty, Resilience, and Hidden Struggles

The Dominican Republic shares the Caribbean island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Known for its beautiful beaches, tropical landscapes, and vibrant culture, it is a popular tourist destination. Yet beyond the resorts, many families face poverty and significant challenges in meeting their basic needs.

The country is also home to many Haitians and their descendants who have settled there in search of work, safety, and better opportunities. Some live in communities known as bateyes, originally established to house workers on sugarcane plantations. Many of these families face difficult living conditions, limited access to healthcare and education, and challenges obtaining legal documentation. Haitian migrants and their families can also be vulnerable to discrimination, exploitation, and extortion, particularly when their immigration status is uncertain.

Through partnerships with local churches and community leaders, Bread to the Nations comes alongside vulnerable Haitian families in the Dominican Republic, offering practical support, encouragement, and opportunities to experience the love of Christ.
